STRIVING & SURVIVING / AT YOUR OWN PACE

Work, at your pace

You might need a job soon, want a change, or simply be wondering what else you could do. Start with the option that fits today.

EXPLORE YOUR OPTIONS

I’m not sure what work would suit me.

My Next Move lets you search careers, browse industries, and explore your interests. Use it to gather possibilities, not to decide your whole future.

One thing to try

Choose one role. Look at its everyday tasks and preparation, then write down what interests you and what you want to ask about.

LOOK FOR WORK

I’m ready to look for a job.

USAGov brings together job-search resources, state job banks, and ways to find local help.

One thing to try

Choose one job title and an area you can reach. Read one listing carefully: duties, hours, pay, requirements, and how to apply. Keep a copy of the listing before you apply.

Find job-search resources ↗USAGov · Openings and requirements vary.
BUILD A SKILL

I may need training first.

USAGov explains where to look for government training programs and resources for resumes, interviews, and paying for training.

Questions before signing up

Ask: “What does the full program cost? What are the entry requirements? What credential would I earn? Is funding available, and what would I need to qualify?” Check the schedule, travel, equipment costs, and any childcare needs too.

LEARN WHILE WORKING

I want to earn while I learn.

Registered Apprenticeships combine paid work with job-related learning. Apprenticeship.gov explains the pathway and links to opportunities.

Questions for a program

Ask about starting pay, work and class hours, entry requirements, training length, and costs such as tools, transport, or tuition. Apply through the employer or program sponsor listed.

I have experience, but I don’t know how to describe it.

Start with something you actually did. Write the task, how you handled it, and the result. Paid work, volunteering, school projects, and other responsibilities can all give you examples. Describe your experience accurately.

For example: “Planned a daily service route around appointment times and kept customers informed of changes.”
